First Character Part 2 (Blender)
September 19, 2025
This was a fun little exercise I did to reinforce some new 3D design techniques I’m learning. I’ve been using the simple one-color design at left as a visual signature for a while now – I originally lifted the treatment from a tattoo illustration I saw online many years ago. I can’t seem to track the original down anymore, but it reminded me so much of our playful and beloved puggy Yuki, so I adapted it in Figma to stick on cards and envelopes we send out.
After I recently finished up an immensely informative Udemy tutorial, I wanted to make sure the concepts I learned stuck (specifically the pipeline of preparing Blender files for Substance Painter), so I picked this design to evolve the original sticker in 3D, and also whipped up a quick 2D Illustrator version for completenes. For the updated versions I made sure to include Yuki’s favorite red collar and pink heart-shaped name tag. Takeaway: doing textures in Substance is SO much easier and more effective than what I was doing up until now – I can’t imagine going back.
