For a second time, I worked on this piece in parallel with another drawing in my bird series as a multitasking exercise. This is my second entry in a planned series of isometric (technically axonometric) cityscapes, but this time I wanted to try combining the technical line drawings of the structures with a more organic treatment for the foliage and background.
I started by making an axonometric grid, and turned on snap to point to draw the buildings and other structures. I used my Wacom tablet to fill in the painterly details for the vegetation and background elements. After that I filled in the base colors of the structures, and then converted the foliage and background elements into gradient meshes so that I could apply colors to them individually to achieve a watercolor effect. This piece was pretty labor intensive, and took me about 3 weeks picking away at it for a few hours a day.
