A family favorite: “The Farfalle”
May 11, 2025
I tried a little experiment and worked on this in parallel with my first bird illustration (“Jay”) – to see If I could develop my rhythm for working on multiple drawings in different styles at the same time, as I continue to evolve my personal style and learn some new techniques along the way.
Technically, this one was pretty straightforward: I drew an isometric grid (well, technically axonometric, based on what I’ve learned since), and started piecing it together one building at a time; Illustrator’s “Snap to Point” feature made it easier that I anticipated to use the grid as a basis for getting the basic elements into place. Aesthetically though, there was a point about halfway through this piece where I felt it wasn’t coming together as well as I originally imagined, so I kept reminding myself to ‘trust the process,’ and rely on my instincts to make adjustments down the road. Again, I don’t have any real deadlines now, which in a way makes it even more challenging to decide when a drawing like this is actually ‘finished.’ Pencils down!
