This is my second of a planned series of bird illustrations, and I used similar techniques as the previous one (Steller’s Jay) – a combination of vector shapes drawn on my Wacom tablet using the Blob brush and gradient meshes in Illustrator to simulate an opaque watercolor effect. Perhaps unsurprisingly, this one was a bit easier to complete, because I had a better idea about the level of detail I ultimately wanted to capture, and the final coloring was easier to figure out. I will probably draw one or two more birds before I call this series done.
