Japan 2026: Vintage Shimokitazawa
Tadaima kaerimashita! We just got back from three weeks in Japan, and in lieu of a chronological travelogue, I’ll be posting a few short, self-contained snapshots of some of our experiences, varying in scope and in no particular order. Our last few trips were packed with loaded agendas, but this time we deliberately made fewer plans so that we could spend the majority of our free time simply wandering at our own pace.
Over the years, I’ve frequently referred friends to Shimokitazawa as a home base for their Tokyo travels, but despite many visits this was the first time we actually stayed there ourselves. While it lacks the overwhelming chaos of major hubs like Shinjuku or Shibuya (for better or worse), the neighborhood affords quick, effortless access to the rest of the city via two major train lines. And more importantly, Shimokita is a fantastic desination in its own right, trading massive retail centers for its unique bohemian charm defined by narrow, winding alleys, world-class vintage shopping, indie theaters, and relaxed cafes.
Speaking of vintage, here are a few snaps of some of the shops we encountered during our stay. More to come!
