Above left and right: Beatles and other 1960s paraphernalia; impressive Godzilla poster collection. Below: The lone Astro Boy figure I saw (and didn’t buy!).
Ostensibly planned as a family trip to get up and about for a couple days, we attended The Washington State Toy Fair held in Vancouver, WA this past weekend. In hindsight I realize we could have hit up the same show when it was in nearby Everett this past spring. but it was a nice excuse to stay in Portland for a couple days while we were down there. My ulterior motive for attending the show was to spark some more ideas for future design projects, and I’ve been pretty steadfast in my resolve to not buy stuff, so it was purely for research purposes. Really!
The show itself was just okay to be honest – I was hoping for a bit more variety, especially vintage toys – but perhaps I shouldn’t have been too surprised that Funko pops, modern figures and Labubus were in abundance everywhere. There were a handful of vintage sellers though, and I spent the majority of my time at their booths getting nostalgic and taking photos. For future reference though, I’ll make a point to do a bit more research before attending similar shows – I’ve read there’s good fair in Chicago that features more vintage toys, so that one might be worth attending as some point. All this said though, it was an enjoyable weekend, and I’m glad we got out for a couple days.
